The term “Boho” refers to the eclectic hippie style that features loose, flowy clothing, fun prints, ethnic-inspired accessories and natural-looking hair and makeup. Partially inspired by 70’s fashion, Boho style is all about creativity, freedom and self-expression. Here are some tips to help you get the Boho look:
Neutral and natural colors
Earthy tones and flowing fabrics provide the backbone of the Boho Chic wardrobe. Avoid very dark pieces and neon colors, and opt for natural colors with splashes of reds, greens and blues.
Boho is all about comfort. Think large knit sweaters, peasant blouses, tiered skirts and maxi dresses that tastefully disguise lumps and bumps, and allow the skin to breathe.
A Boho outfit should involve plenty of layering. A peasant blouse paired with a knitted sweater and cutoff jeans, for example, is a great Boho look. A tiered skirt, fitted blouse and vest is another. To complete the look, layer articles that feature embellishments such as leather, lace, fur, crochet and embroidery.
Add a splash of color and interest to your Boho outfit with colorful prints. Florals, plaid, paisley and ethnic prints are very popular. These playful prints can be just about any color, so long as they come in a shade that can be found in nature.
Playful Boho style is all about accessories. Bangles and large beaded earrings are all must-haves, as are boots of many different styles. Large, stone-pendant necklaces are also very popular, and no Boho wardrobe is complete without a wide-brimmed floppy hat or two.
A word of caution
There is so much creative freedom allowed in Boho style, that it can be tempting to go a little overboard. Avoid putting together outfits that are too colorful or too busy with accessories. Keep it simple, and only use a couple of accents for color.
